culture - including norms, values, customs, traditions, 
priorities, group dynamics, social networks, power 
structures, visual culture, built environment, cultural 
landscape, etc.

opportunities - including research areas best aligned 
with the sponsoring organization's culture, areas most 
likely to affect change or challenge existing norms, 
risk assessments for different research trajectories, 
and other directions likely to be productive.
Components critical for research implementation 
- includes design, development, and prioritization of key 
research methods, protocols, resources, tools, 
training/orientation of field teams, strategic guidance for 
vendors and consulting agencies, and recommendations 
for managing the relationship between quantitative and 
qualitative research.
Mixed methods, optimized according to research plan 
- components may include participant observation, 
shadowing, visual surveys, cognitive mapping, participant
generated data, and informal interviews; supplemented 
by design exercises such as immersive experiences, 
analogous observations, group prototyping, card sorts, 
focus groups, user interface evaluations and interactive 
prototype refinement.
Anthropologically-rooted ethnographic skill building for 
teams deployed for field research - including basic 
methods training, research preparation, project specific 
field protocols, best known methods, data management, 
theoretical reviews, cultural context reviews, tools and 
checklists, interpretive guidance
Critical, anthropologically informed systemic analysis of 
research, expressed visually and tangibly - may include
cultural contexts, pattern identification, interpretive
framework development, design principles, and iterative 
prototyping. Deliverables include reports, sketches, 
scenarios, videos, storyboards, diagrams, prototypes 
(objects, experiences, interactions, spaces, systems, 
technologies), from workshops, brainstorms, participatory 
design sessions, etc.
Strategic roadmap for integrating research deliverables  
- may include recommendations for target audiences, 
format, media, style, distribution, potential partnerships, 
and other opportunities.
